--Plan your trip together. Study your destinations or share travel

to plan for and divide it among the members. If it is a family vacation,

Senior Discounts on French Rail . Once in France, travelers 60
years and over can buy the Carte Senior, which gives 25-50% reductions
on first or second class French rail tickets depending on day and time of
travel--plus how early you make a reservation. Cards can be purchased at
railroad stations and at French Travel Agencies for FF285 (aprox. $41)
Even without the Carte Senior travelers over 60 are eligible
for the Decouverte Senior discount--which is a 25% reduction on many TGV
trains. Of course proof of age is required and these are only available
in France. Mr & Mrs Albert Shigekuni of Oahu brought TERC
this information. 28 June 2000
I never imagined we'd have such absolute FUNbut we did I'd
recommend our itinerary to anyoneespecially if over 66 years old. We
Traveled with only 12 lb. back packs. No Purse, No other Carry On
stuffwhat a revelation. Minimum possession not only work, but made
for a totally fun trip. We watched many "old" people struggling on and off
trainshumping heavy suitcaseswhile we "floated" on and off with
great ease. Marlene and Martin Hall, Big Island of Hawaii

Looking for Kamaaina Traveling Compantion(s) who are going to Greece and
Switzerland. I am booked to go August 2nd to Zurich and on to Athens.
Skymiles allows date changes, so depending on my summer work, I can possibly
cancel this for a later departure in December-January, especially if a Hawaiian
or two would like to join me in this adventure travel. Have been to Basel
before. I am in my 50's and am youthfully oriented. I'm taking my pup tent
for camping opportunities; otherwise, I stay in hostels and b&b's. Teaching
English is my parttime work. E-mail:
Makaha2@juno.com
Rosemary of Aliso Viejo, CA My telephone: 949-716-5540 for any
kamaainas who wish to chat about European adventuring.... Please put
this on your bulletin board, Mele. 13 May 2000
Combating loneliness is an issue for solo travelers and hosteling
helps alleviate it. I have met a lot of Europeans in Hostels who have become
traveling companions for a day or so. Several have even invited me to their
homes as an over night guest. I evev use hostels when I travel with a
partnerbut some times finds the price of B&Bs can be the same as
our combined Hostel fee. "Taking a vacation from group living can be nice."

Hi Mele, I do agree with you that there isn't much to see in Nice
& their beach is a joke. I wouldn't call a pile of rocks next to
the ocean a beach. However, for a solo traveler on a tight budget, Nice
is an ideal spot as a base to explore the rest of the Riviera. The rooms
and food are cheap and the train, bus, markets, department stores, laundromats,
pharmacies are all within walking distance. From Nice it's an easy day trip
to Monaco, Eze, or Menton or west to Antibes or Cannes..

A tip for solo travelers: Take a stereo cassette player to mask
traffic noises, ringing cowbells, and snoring bunkmates. It won't sound as
great as a CD player, it is cheap and if it is lost or stolen, you won't
care. I tape selections from my CD and off the radio before I leave. When
I'm tired of hearing languages I can't understand, I switch on my tape player.
While strolling through the streets of Florence, instead of listening to
the racket caused by the hordes of mopeds, I listened to Puccini's "O mio
babbino caro" while taking in its beautiful architecture (ala A Room With
A View). Yours truly, Robert Kaneshiro of Honolulu
